Shin splints have a number of causes and can occur on the inside or the outside of the shin. With shin splints pain around the front of the shin comes straight away when your feet hit the ground badly. The pain on the inner part of the shin is is much worse when you stand on your toes. If you keep on doing sport when you have shin splints, the pain tends to spread towards the knees too.

Lumber strain usually occurs in weight lifting, but can occur in sports that involves twisting the back, for example golf. Sudden lower back pain appears with twisting or lifting.
